Hire a representative, or go it alone?
Generally speaking, these are the two most common paths that customers choose. But it can still be a hard decision to make.
A claims management company (CMC) acts as your voice and will raise a complaint to the airline on your behalf. They’ll receive direct correspondence from the airline, saving you having to go back and forth with them.
You’ll hear back from your CMC once an outcome is reached or possibly to get some further information from you to add to the complaint against the airline.
One of the main benefits of hiring a CMC to represent you is the ‘no win no fee’ model. Meaning if your claim for compensation is unsuccessful, you won’t be charged a penny.

CMC vs. No CMC - the showdown
Let’s run down some of the main pros and cons for each of the main two options. We’ll keep it short and snappy.
CMC
Pros:
- Gain a professional representative that knows the industry and will do all the heavy lifting for you
- Typically, if your compensation claim is unsuccessful you won’t be charged a fee. So there’s zero financial risk in taking this route
- Quite fast at coming to a resolution. Many have built relationships with airlines which can help speed the process up
- Knowledgeable and can answer other questions you may have around the laws and regulations that protect you
- Have claimed back millions for their clients and so some would argue that results speak for themselves

Cons:
- There will be a cost for any compensation that’s awarded, in the form of a commission charge. Usually commission is a fixed percentage, so the more you're awarded the higher the CMC’s commission will be
- Some argue that CMC’s aren’t necessary, as they don’t hold any secret information that a regular traveller won't have access to and so struggle to see the actual benefit of using a third party representative
Do it yourself
Pros:
- No cost. Doing it yourself means you don’t have to pay any commission in the event of a successful claim and so keep 100% of any pay out
- Compensation claims are generally factually based - e.g. the plane was either delayed by 5 hours and it was the airlines fault, or it wasn’t – so many find they don’t need to know all the technical aspects to put forward a claim
- It can give a feeling of accomplishment to take it on yourself, whatever the outcome
Cons:
- Taxing. Especially if the claim drags on, it can get tedious and you can spend a lot of time going back and forth. In a denied claim, some don’t know if what the airline has said is right and so end up speaking to someone who knows more about it anyway.
- There is a cost. Individuals may prefer someone take this task on for them, even if they feel they could do it themselves. The cost of time, although not financial, is still a cost that's precious to many.
There really isn’t a right answer as to which option's best.
